tambur

A pair of tambur.

A stick-beaten, rope-tensioned, double-headed membranophone with a cylindrical metal body. Only one head is struck; the other head is for resonance and may have a few gut snares stretched across it. Used sparingly as part of common practice pélog gamelans to perform a group of pieces called gendhing gati or mares. The tambur in the palace are modeled on European military side drums.
