siter

Metal-string zither with a box resonator. Strings are paired in double courses and plucked with the performer’s long thumbnails. It is tuned an octave higher than the clempung. Most siter are strung on both faces of their box resonators, one side tuned to sléndro and the other to pélog.  So, even when two gamelans are set up together (one sléndro, the other pélog), only one siter is present. The palace owns a few siters that do not belong to any particular gamelans but that can be used with all common practice sets.
