bonang monggang

Two bonang monggang of the gamelan K.K. Gunturlaut.

A single-row gong chime with three large horizontally-suspended bronze gongs with deeply turned-back rims and raised central bosses, which are struck with a pair of thinly-padded stick beaters held in the hands of the performer. The Yogyakarta gamelan monggang includes four such bonang, two of them, called setren or female, are tuned an octave lower than the other two, which are called jaler, or male.
